The Mourne Mountain Rescue Team is a 24 hour a day, 365 days a year voluntary emergency rescue service providing a search and rescue response in extreme terrain and weather conditions in the Mourne Mountains, Slieve Croob, Slieve Gullion, the Cooley Mountains and anywhere else in Ireland if and when we are tasked.

If you’re a keen mountaineer, at home in the Mournes, have a good knowledge of navigation, rope work, first aid, teamwork, and a willingness to develop same while learning new skills through your involvement in a challenging yet rewarding voluntary emergency service, we’d be keen to hear from you. Recruitment to The Team is open to people over 18 years of age.

Availability and proximity to the Mournes is a critical factor in playing a key role in a local emergency service.

Membership Process

Joining and working with The Mourne Mountain Rescue Team will be rewarding, fun and will enable you to help provide a real service to those in need or difficulty in the Mourne Mountains and surrounding areas.

1. Apply Online

If you fulfil the above, simply complete our application form

2. Selection Day

Suitable applicants will be invited to a selection day

3. Vetting Process

Successful applicants will be PSNI checked / vetted

4. Induction Training

Successful applicants will be invited to undertake induction training

5. Initial Training

Induction training will involve 3 evenings per month over a 3 month period

6. Team Training

Successful candidates will be invited to undertake full team training

7. Ongoing Training

Full team training will involve 1 day and 1 evening per month for 3 months

8. Callout List

Successful candidates will be added provisionally to the call out list

9. Final Training

Full team training will continue as above for a further 6 months

10. Assessment

Successful candidates will be invited to undertake a new member assessment

And then the hard work begins!

Candidates can avail of a mentoring system as well as the support of the wider team. Candidates are required to attend 100% of induction training and 75% of full team training. Other optional training opportunities may become available in addition to core training listed above.

About Us

The Team is made up of 36 volunteers who live in and around the Mourne area. We are on call 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. We undertake a substantial amount of training in advanced first aid, technical rope work and search management.
